The project, which received approval from the municipal government board, has an estimated execution period of 12 months. The objective is not merely to physically renovate the square, but to reimagine it as a more versatile, sustainable space with enhanced environmental quality, as highlighted by the Councillor for Public Works and Services.
The intervention will cover an area exceeding 4,500 square meters and extends to the spaces formed by Reyes Católicos, Irala, Zuberoa, and Lapurdi streets. Key planned actions include the demolition of existing elements such as pavements, urban furniture, and obsolete structures, along with a comprehensive renovation of the urbanization, featuring new surfaces, waterproofing systems, and the adaptation of urban services.
“"It's not just about physically renovating the square, but about rethinking it as a more versatile, sustainable space with higher environmental quality."
The project also envisions a reorganization of the square's uses, incorporating new seating areas, a renovated children's play zone, spaces for calisthenics, and a hospitality kiosk designed to revitalize the area. Specifically, a dedicated area for children aged 0 to 12 will be created, featuring wooden play structures, slides, walkways, and various swings.
Furthermore, the presence of vegetation and trees will be reinforced, and a more open central area will be created to host outdoor events and activities. Another primary goal of the project is to improve accessibility. Currently, the square has a longitudinal inclination of 2% towards Kirikiño Avenue, while Reyes Católicos Street has an 8% downward slope towards Irala Street. This creates a complex intersection that has been addressed through the integration of stairs and ramps within the square. Additionally, the paving will be renewed, and pedestrian traffic conditions will be improved, fostering better integration between the square and its urban surroundings.
