The Artunduaga sports center in Basauri will host this Sunday the XXVIII edition of the Paralympic Meeting, the 'Javi Conde' Grand Prix, which will bring together over 250 athletes. The competition, included in the International Paralympic Committee's calendar, is organized annually by the local Merchants Association.
The local club, celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year, will be represented by over 50 boys and girls. Alongside them, several Paralympic medalists have been confirmed, including Moroccans Mounced Bouja, Fatima Ezzahra, Youssra Karim, and Azeddine Nouiri; a Colombian selection with athletes like Xiomara Saldarriaga and Luis Fernando Lucum; Spaniards Alba García and Ángel Marín; and 10 medalists from the New Delhi 2025 World Championships.
Competitiveness is guaranteed in an intense day of sports starting at 9:00 AM, featuring 47 events for both women and men, across sprints, middle-distance, long-distance, throws, and long jump. The best athletes in each of the 5 disability categories, as well as the best male and female athletes without disabilities, will receive recognition.
The event will also serve to raise visibility for athletes with intellectual disabilities, joining the #masintelectualesLA2028 and #downLA2028 movements for the inclusion of a specific category and an expansion of events in the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
Furthermore, the Paralympic Meeting continues its tribute to Joseba Larrinaga with the celebration of the trophy bearing his name. Larrinaga, a Basque athlete who passed away in 2013, won a silver medal in the marathon at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games. Since 2014, Basauri has hosted this trophy, which awards the first athlete with a disability in the 5000-meter race.
The mayor of Basauri, Asier Iragorri, has defined the Paralympic Meeting as a "benchmark for adapted athletics" that champions "quality and inclusion." He highlighted that it will bring together "elite national and international athletes with young promises."
From the commercial entity, Romualdo Doistua expressed the organization's "pride" in the event's trajectory, while Alvaro Parro of Laboral Kutxa emphasized that "there is another way to do sports," which the Meeting demonstrates "with an inclusive competition for everyone."
