Assembly has begun on the new bridge connecting Erandio and Barakaldo, with the installation of the first component, a 32-meter, 15-ton side cantilever.

One of the initial pieces of the bridge, a 32-meter long and 15-ton side cantilever, has already been put in place. The second piece, of similar length and weighing around 50 tons, is a metal box. Carlos Alzaga, the provincial deputy for Infrastructure and Territorial Development, who attended to witness the start of the installation work, stated: “The assembly of the bridge is, perhaps, one of the most striking phases of the process.” To achieve this, heavy-tonnage cranes and specialized auxiliary equipment are being used, enabling the lifting or positioning of large and heavy elements with millimeter precision.
The metal structure measures 352.2 meters in length, built using a continuous box girder system supported by 10 pillars, featuring a movable section in the center.
As detailed by the provincial deputy, from a structural perspective, the bridge presents a very high level of technical complexity, possessing a curved geometry with longitudinal and transversal slopes. “Furthermore, it should be noted that the structure opens in central spans to allow the passage of large vessels,” he specified.
The new bridge serves a specific purpose: to encourage daily commutes by bicycle and on foot, and to improve connectivity with public transport. The project is part of Bizkaia's territorial strategy to promote sustainable mobility and reduce the use of private vehicles and polluting emissions.
