Asier Abaunza, a councilor in Bilbao, stated that his continuity in office beyond May 2027 will depend on the PNV and has endorsed Mikel Hidalgo as the candidate for mayor. Abaunza emphasized that international events are vital for boosting the city's global profile, demonstrating that Bilbao, despite its size, is capable of hosting major events like a potential World Cup.
Regarding Hidalgo's candidacy, Abaunza praised his profile, noting his designation by the Bizkai Buru Batzar. The councilor mentioned they have worked together before and considers Hidalgo an excellent candidate who combines youth, experience, and a strong desire to work for Bilbao.
Abaunza also expressed gratitude to former mayor Juan Mari Aburto for the opportunities provided and for the significant legacy he leaves to the city. He recalled key moments of their collaboration, such as the opening of the Deusto canal and the inauguration of the Intermodal station, highlighting Aburto's closeness to the citizens.
On his own political future, Abaunza clarified that his continuation will be decided by the party. "We don't nominate ourselves; the party always decides who goes forward," he said, adding that he is "ready for whatever they ask."
Addressing the possibility of Bilbao hosting the 2030 Football World Cup, Abaunza indicated that he does not foresee major urban planning modifications being necessary. "These are more issues related to the logistics of the event itself," he explained, distinguishing it from the urban transformations seen during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
