The new penitentiary center in Gipuzkoa, located in Zubieta, has been officially inaugurated, replacing the old Martutene prison and housing rehabilitation programs and maternity units.

The new penitentiary center in Gipuzkoa, situated in the Eskuzaitzeta industrial estate of Zubieta, has been officially inaugurated. This new facility replaces the old Martutene prison, which will be demolished to make way for 400 homes. The total investment amounts to 45.5 million euros, with a capacity for 450 inmates and 255 staff members.
Inmates will be distributed across six modules designed to facilitate tailored rehabilitation pathways and specific programs for different profiles. One of these modules will be for women, including a floor specifically dedicated to mothers with babies. The remaining five modules will be for men.
The modern facilities include 10-square-meter cells, common areas, and partially covered enclosed courtyards for the exclusive use of inmates within each module. Additionally, the prison offers shared facilities such as a gym, library, pelota court, sports hall, emergency room, and dentist.
Comprehensive medical care, managed by Osakidetza, will be provided, including family doctors, nurses, and auxiliaries, with reinforcements from gynecologists, midwives, dentists, psychiatrists, and psychologists as needed.
