The heavy goods vehicle experienced a road departure and overturned on the A-8 motorway in Abanto-Zierbena, near Ugaldebieta, heading towards Cantabria. The driver sustained minor injuries and was immediately transported to Cruces Hospital. The accident caused significant traffic congestion, which is expected to recur today as two lanes remain closed for complex vehicle removal operations.
The traffic incident occurred around 5:30 PM on a particularly busy stretch of the Biscay road network. For reasons under investigation, the articulated vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and overturned on the carriageway. This necessitated the immediate closure of two lanes, leading to kilometer-long traffic jams that reached up to four kilometers in length by the end of the day.
Thanks to the swift and coordinated intervention of Bizkaia's emergency services and operational crews, the efforts to clear the road began immediately. The truck's tractor unit was successfully removed yesterday afternoon, and the semi-trailer was moved off the main flow of traffic. However, the trailer's large size and structural damage have postponed its final removal, as technicians determined the need to use cutting torches for precise cuts in the metal structure to ensure a completely safe transport.
The operations resumed early this Friday morning with specialized technical deployment. As a direct consequence of these removal efforts, traffic in the Ugaldebieta area is currently restricted. One of the two available lanes of the A-8 towards Cantabria remains closed, as does the exit lane connecting Ugaldebieta to the town center of Gallarta. The Provincial Council of Bizkaia urges maximum caution and prudence for all drivers transiting through this section in the coming hours, recommending reduced speed and maintaining a safe distance.
