The local entity of Itziar, within the municipality of Deba, has declared 'enough' to the vandalism it is suffering, with damages amounting to 10,000 euros to be covered by its own budget.

The small local entity of Itziar, located in the municipality of Deba, has declared 'enough' to the vandalism it is enduring. The series of hooligan acts began with the breaking of streetlights leading to the cemetery. A few weeks later, public restrooms suffered various damages, followed by offensive graffiti on recently renovated walls. The list continues with damage to the school garden shed and, after the Erromeria Eguna festival, further vandalism against numerous streetlights in the town center. Most recently, access was gained to the youth center in the Burugorri building, where a painting set was stolen and graffiti was spray-painted on a cupboard.
These incidents have resulted in expenses of 10,000 euros, which the Itziar Neighborhood Council will have to cover from its own budget. The council stated, 'The Itziar Neighborhood Council is a small entity with limited financial capacity. These types of damages directly impact the maintenance of heritage belonging to the entire community.'
The Council has condemned these events and launched initiatives to curb them. 'The repetition of these acts indicates they are not isolated cases or minor incidents. They are unacceptable actions, forcing us to take measures to stop them,' stated the Itziar Neighborhood Council. These measures include filing an official complaint with the Municipal Police, which has been forwarded to the Ertzaintza (Basque Police), aiming to identify the perpetrators and demand compensation for the damages caused.
In addition to the complaint, restrictions will be imposed on the use of some public facilities, which have been victims of vandalism. 'Some services that were previously available thanks to the trust placed in citizens will be limited. Access to the Burugorri building will be restricted, with new keys distributed only to specific individuals. Furthermore, the public restrooms in the square will remain closed until the situation is clarified,' the Neighborhood Council indicated. They fear that vandalism may continue and have not ruled out implementing surveillance measures to address the situation.
The Council appeals to the responsibility of the citizens to contextualize the seriousness of these events and put a definitive stop to them. 'The deterioration that these behaviors cause to the model of coexistence and community building that we wish to preserve in Itziar is particularly concerning. Considering them mere pranks and downplaying their importance can contribute to normalizing these behaviors, leading to an educational problem. Therefore, the Itziar Neighborhood Council calls on all citizens to act with responsibility and civility to correct these regrettable trends.'
