Barakaldo will host this Saturday the live sustainable fashion contest final for Bizkaia, “Barakaldo Josten 2026”. The initiative, which received the “Innovación en Acción” award in the “Retos de Innovación Abierta 2026” contest promoted by the Barakaldo City Council, will bring together three women's teams at the Clara Campoamor Center. There, within a four-hour period (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM), they will transform textile waste collected from various local businesses into a complete, ready-to-wear "look".
David Solla, president of Inguralde, highlighted that it will be "a special experience" to see the teams in action, fulfilling three essential objectives: "supporting local talent, boosting the circular economy, and promoting environmental awareness".
The teams, having completed previous training and material selection phases, will begin their creative process at 10:00 AM. The deadline is 2:00 PM, after which their proposals will be presented to a jury composed of representatives from Koopera and ACE Barakaldo, alongside local designer Javier Palacios.
The jury's decision will be announced next Tuesday, September 29th, also at the Clara Campoamor Center. This event will be preceded by a roundtable discussion on local commerce, followed by a runway show featuring all the creations. Each participant in a winning team will receive €200 to spend in local shops. The overall winning proposal will have the opportunity to represent Bizkaia in the grand final of "Euskadi Josten 2026", taking place on November 14th in Bilbao.
“Barakaldo Josten 2026” is a project by the Agencia Duara, recognized with an “Innovación en Acción” award from the “Retos de Innovación Abierta” contest, co-promoted by the Barakaldo City Council and Bilbao Metropoli 30. Its aim is to encourage participation from individuals interested in fashion with social and environmental consciousness, creating garments through the reuse of textile waste.
The competition has previously included several phases, such as an exhibition at FP Barakaldo to encourage participation. In April, participants were selected and teams were formed. In May, the nine selected participants attended a masterclass at the studio of designer Javier Palacios, where materials were also chosen. Ten establishments in Barakaldo have actively collaborated, including Tapicería Santamaría, PC Box Barakaldo, Bizi Slow, and Bizi Granel.
