Ormaiztegi, a municipality with residents from over twenty nationalities, is preparing to celebrate its Intercultural Festival this Sunday. The event, marking its eighth edition, has been organized by the Town Hall and the Zumalakarregi Museum as part of the 'Migrations' program, with participation from various local communities. This year, countries such as Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Senegal, and Euskal Herria will showcase their gastronomy, music, dance, and crafts.
The morning will kick off at 11:30 AM with a parade of traditional costumes departing from the Town Hall. Following this, from 12:30 PM onwards, the tent set up in the square will open, hosting the rest of the day's programming for this special event.
Gastronomy will once again play a central role. Participating communities will prepare typical dishes from their countries of origin, available for tasting via two-euro tickets. The proceeds will be shared among the participants. Additionally, workshops such as Nigerian braids and Moroccan henna will be offered to encourage youth participation.
Music and dance will take center stage from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The group Dakka Rasta (of Moroccan roots), based in Bilbao, and the Ecuadorian group Recordar es vivir will perform. Furthermore, communities from Nicaragua, Colombia, and Nigeria will present their dances, alongside local youths performing regional dances.
In parallel, the tenth edition of the Local Craft Fair will take place, featuring local creators showcasing and selling their work. Participants include Cosmo Artesanía, Panpoxa Bitxiak, Ángel Elorza Fotografía, and María Pilar Horrego Artes Plásticas, presenting pieces from various disciplines. Finally, at 2:30 PM, a raffle for a basket of artisan products will be held.
The festival, aimed at strengthening ties among all residents and highlighting the richness of diversity in the region, will conclude at 3:30 PM, looking forward to the next edition.
