A member of the Legazpi giants troupe, who has been part of the group since 2018, has emphasized the importance of balance in the world of giants, prioritizing it over brute strength. The group, which initially had only seven members, has seen a significant increase in youth participation in recent years, now boasting 25 members.
The troupe member recounted that, although as a child the big-headed figures (buruhandiak) used to scare him, over the years he became immersed in this world, first as a big-headed figure and then as a giant. Among the ten giants in the group, his favorite is Bruno the blacksmith, but he holds a special affection for the giant Mikele, as that is where he began his journey.
“"Strength is needed, yes, but beyond that, having balance is the most important thing."
To perform with the giants, training is essential, as he explained. The troupe trains in their local premises, practicing turns, maintaining balance, and executing steps. The Legazpi giants weigh around 30 kilograms, but with their costumes, they can reach up to 40 kilograms.
The troupe has been very active, performing not only in Goierri and Euskal Herria but also in Catalonia, Zamora, and La Rioja. This year, they plan to visit Deba, Urnieta, and Iruña. He noted that they receive a warm welcome in the towns they visit and that this work is a pleasure.
Although maintaining professionalism is crucial, he admitted that festivals are experienced in a special way from the giants' perspective. After their performance, they take the opportunity to enjoy the festivities. The troupe member's dream is to one day win the Azpeitia competition, where giants from twenty towns gather and perform two dances to win a cash prize.
During local festivals, his favorite moments are performing the Legazpi giants' jota on txupinazo day and the moment before the drum parade on May 2nd. In addition to participating with the giants, he is a drummer and trikitilari, a member of the Xaukena electro-txaranga, a volunteer in the Legazpi leisure group, and always helps out at the town's txosnas.
