The town of Legazpi celebrated a Canary Islands folklore festival this weekend, featuring the Dance of the Flowers from Tegueste and the txistus from La Gomera. The Uztakale program included the participation of the dance group Sustraiak and the txistulari band Goiz Deia.
A new connection has been forged between the dance groups of Legazpi and Tegueste (Tenerife), following the visit of the Legazpi group to Tenerife last year to celebrate the dance group's 50th anniversary. Through singer Rogelio Botanz, who lives there, they contacted the dancers from Tegueste and learned about the Dance of the Flowers they perform.
As a result of this visit, dancers from Tegueste have been in Legazpi, bringing their Dance of the Flowers, which they presented on two occasions: Saturday afternoon during the Santa Marina festivities in Aztiria, and Sunday midday in Euskal Herria square.
Singer Rogelio Botanz also came with the dancers, along with his percussion group Percuteras de Garaldea. He also brought the txistu used for communication on the island of La Gomera, and gave two demonstrations: one on Friday, with expert Adelma Mendez, and another on Sunday midday with the txalapartaris Sutan Ttakun, in the context of the dancers' performance.
The Legazpi City Council hosted the Canary Islanders on Saturday midday, and gifts were exchanged.
