Bowlers in Goierri are set for a busy weekend, with the sixth round of the Goierri Bowling Championship taking place in Mutiloa on Saturday and the third round of the Gipuzkoa Cup in Segura on Sunday.

The bowling calendar in Goierri is packed, with two significant championships underway: the Goierri Bowling Championship and those organized by the Gipuzkoa Bola and Toka Federation. This Saturday, April 18, the Mutiloa bowling alley will host the sixth round of the Goierri championship, with morning sessions starting at 10:30 AM and afternoon sessions at 4:30 PM. On Sunday, Segura will be the venue for the third round of the Gipuzkoa Cup.
The Goierri championship began on January 24 in Zerain and consists of eight rounds. The next event will be in Idiazabal on May 9, and the final will be held in Legazpi on May 23. This championship is organized by the Goierri bowlers themselves, with the support of the municipalities of Zerain, Segura, Gabiria, Olaberri, Zegama, Mutiloa, Idiazabal, and Legazpi.

"Before, there were older people in the bowling alleys, now I would say the average age has dropped a lot."

Garbiñe Alustiza · Bowler from Zerain
Initially, about 50 bowlers participated in the competition, and currently, 40 remain, including Garbiñe Alustiza from Zerain. As Alustiza explained, 33 men, 4 women, and 3 young people are taking part. Most are from Goierri, although there are also five bowlers from Donostia. Alustiza noted that despite three rounds remaining until the final, the atmosphere is good, but maintaining top positions is challenging, as “eight rounds are many, and one moment you are high in the ranking, but if you have a bad day, you drop to fifth place, and if it's very bad, maybe to tenth.”
Regarding the Gipuzkoa Cup, it started on March 15 in Idiazabal. It consists of four rounds, and the one in Segura will be the third this Sunday. The final will be played on April 26 in Altza. This championship sees 58 bowlers from all over Gipuzkoa participating, 11 of whom are women. Alustiza expressed optimism about the future of bowling, highlighting the rejuvenation of the average age: “Before, there were older people in the bowling alleys, but now, I would say the average age has dropped a lot, it will be in the 50-60 range. Before, there were more people aged 80. Groups of friends are also getting more involved.”
