Volume 33 of the Beasaingo Paperak collection, authored by Juantxo Unanua and Xabier Garmendia, documents the evolution of Beasain over the past 40 years through photographs, achieving remarkable sales success.

The profound transformation experienced by the town of Beasain in recent decades, with new housing and roads, industrial areas, and the renovation of its monumental complex, has been graphically captured. Authors Juantxo Unanua (born in 1958) and Xabier Garmendia (born in 1990) have completed the work Beasain, mende arteko jauzia iruditan (Beasain, a leap between centuries in images), as volume 33 of the Beasaingo Paperak collection. The book has received an excellent reception, with all copies sold out and a new print run being necessary.
Unanua, who was the chronicler for Beasain for El Diario Vasco newspaper until 2022, had collected a large number of photographs during those years. The project originated from a proposal made to the author by a former Culture councilor and a historian, and he finally accepted the request from a municipal authority. Photographs prior to 2002 were in negatives, and those thereafter were in digital format. He invited Garmendia to collaborate on the project, and together they began to shape the work. Although most of the images are by Unanua, photographs by Garmendia and other entities, groups, or organizations have also been used to provide completeness.

"We had to make a selection of themes, that has been the most difficult part."

Xabier Garmendia · Author
Initially, they accumulated about 2,000 pages, and selecting the themes among them was the most complicated part, according to the authors. The objective was to show how the municipality's development has been over the last 40 years, explaining how the town was in each area, how it is today, and what processes it has undergone. For this, it was necessary to include more than one photograph. Five main themes were chosen: urban planning, infrastructure and services, industrial activity, environment, and neighborhoods. These are the chapters of the book, and within each, they have divided the work into subchapters; for example, within the Urban Planning chapter, there is a subchapter on the transformation of Erauskin from a vehicle circulation axis to a pedestrian zone.
With the remaining material, another book will be completed, addressing topics related to people, such as education, culture, festivals, welfare, and economy. This second part is expected to be published by 2027, with the same objective: to show the municipality's development through photographs. The agreement for the first volume was signed in 2023 and published in the summer of 2025, being presented in December 2025. The authors have dedicated many hours to the project, scanning, selecting, and organizing the photographs, but they are satisfied with the result and the reception it has received.

"It has been very well received, all copies are sold out, we didn't think that would happen."

In addition to showing the evolution of Beasain, the book also serves to foster intergenerational dialogue, recalling the past. It has been mentioned that many families used the book during Christmas to share memories and perspectives. To meet citizen demand, the city council has published more copies, which are available for sale in the bookstores of Mirentxu and Jon Aranburu. According to the city council, the work captures the “soul” of the municipality by documenting the profound transformation of the last 40 years through nearly a thousand photographs, covering all corners of the town and promoting dialogue between the past and the future.
