The Beasain Town Hall and the Lau Katu Beasain association have renewed their agreement to ensure the humane and effective management of the street cat population. The council has provided a premises for the association's activities and extended the collaboration, highlighting the "very positive" results achieved to date.
The core of the initiative is the TNR method (Trap, Neuter, and Return), which the town hall describes as "the most humane, effective, and sustainable procedure for controlling the street cat population." This system gradually reduces the number of cats on the streets, preventing uncontrolled reproduction and unwanted litters.
The involvement of residents has been requested to maintain the colonies in adequate hygienic conditions. The feeding of street cats is strictly regulated, and only individuals with municipal accreditation are permitted to provide food at authorized points, using appropriate dry feed and maintaining cleanliness in the area.
Should any citizen observe a cat that appears abandoned, a litter, or an unmanaged colony, they are asked to contact the Local Police at 943 02 80 80.
Furthermore, the Town Hall reminds that current regulations require full responsibility from families with companion animals (dogs, cats, and ferrets). Key obligations include mandatory identification (microchip before two months of age), mandatory sterilization of domestic cats before six months, and the prohibition of private breeding.
