Final preparations are underway for the opening of the new Zubieta penitentiary. The official inauguration is set for June 15, while the Martutene prison is scheduled to close permanently on June 24. For security reasons, the exact date for the relocation of inmates has not been disclosed, though it is confirmed to take place during the third week of June.
Spanning over 30,000 square meters, the new facility is the most modern in the penitentiary network. It features 234 residential cells, a social insertion center with 50 rooms, and additional support areas. The total capacity includes 400 spots for ordinary regime inmates and 75 for those with external leave permits.
The Basque Government will manage the facility following the transfer of ownership from the State. According to the Department of Justice and Human Rights, the staff of 247 employees at Zubieta is currently being finalized, with the regional executive aiming to have 95% of all prison staff positions across Euskadi filled by mid-June.
