The town of Tolosa is once again buzzing with cultural activity following the Easter holiday, marked by the return of the Tolofolk festival. This sixth edition, taking place from Thursday to Sunday, offers a free opportunity to enjoy traditional Basque folk music and sounds from other regions. The festival, now a fixture on the cultural calendar with a growing number of followers, introduces a significant electronic component this year, merging tradition and modernity in its melodies.
Verdura Square will serve as the main hub for Tolofolk, though music will also extend to Plaza Nueva. The program includes the traditional kalepoza through the Old Town and a lively session at the Frontón bar, representing the more alternative performances within this comprehensive and diverse lineup.
Regarding the schedule, on Thursday, April 9, Neonymus and Amaia Elizaran will perform in Verdura Square, showcasing Bilbao artist Silberius de Ura's project that combines technology with unusual instruments. On Friday, April 10, the duo Harribitxi will champion the vibrant character of the txistu in Verdura Square, joined by singer María Ereña. In the evening, DJ Makala from Zarautz will set the mood at the Frontón bar with a mix of global music genres.
On Saturday, April 11, the Old Town will host the kalepoza, featuring regular participants like Lasko Txaranga, Txarantzaina, and local txistularis, alongside special guests such as the Huarte Jotas School from Navarra. In the afternoon, in Plaza Nueva, the Galician trio Mercedes Peón, Ana Fernández, and Mónica De Nut will present their Deixaas project, blending electronics, traditional percussion, and vocals. Peón was nominated for a Goya Award for the film O corpo aberto and received the National Music Award from the Xunta de Galicia in 2008.
The festival will conclude on Sunday, April 12, with a performance by Donostia's Antton Valverde in Verdura Square. As one of the leading figures in popular music in Euskal Herria, Valverde received the Adarra Award last year for his extensive career. At 82 years old, he will perform in a quintet format alongside Tolosa bassist Txema Garcés.
