“"At the time, the narrowness of the passage, potential road safety issues, and the need to maintain an adequate drainage system forced its use to be limited to cyclists. However, the absence of accidents and the development of technical solutions that allow the concrete margins to be extended to the tunnel wall, without compromising the drainage function, have made this action viable."

The Morlans Tunnel will remain closed to traffic for four months, starting tomorrow, to undertake essential renovation works and allow its use by pedestrians. These works will transform the existing bike path within the tunnel into a route that can also be utilized by walkers.
To achieve this, two one-meter-wide sidewalks will be created on both sides of the 1.4-kilometer-long bike path. Juantxo Marrero, Councillor for Projects and Works, explained that this initiative addresses a "historic demand" that began 17 years ago when the tunnel was first adapted for cyclists.
The intervention in Morlans will maintain the current 2.2-meter-wide bike path, adding the lateral sidewalks, which will be differentiated from the central lane with specific paint markings. Additionally, the project will include cleaning the waterproofing asphalt membrane and incorporating a security system comprising 35 cameras and 20 loudspeakers, which will be controlled by the Municipal Police.
