The Minister of Sustainable Mobility, Susana García Chueca, speaking at the midpoint of the legislature in Euskadi, stated that the executive is focused on "responding to the problems of Basque citizens". "I believe the entire government is working with great intensity to face not only present challenges but also future ones in times of global geopolitical and strategic uncertainty," she affirmed.
In an interview with Radio Euskadi, García Chueca reviewed the challenges facing her Department in the second half of the term. These include "launching the Topo in Gipuzkoa this year, initiating the tram works in Vitoria-Gasteiz to extend it to the Zabalgana neighborhood, and responding to the needs that citizens are demanding from us in various parts of the geography". "We are undertaking major infrastructure projects, but we are not neglecting smaller ones in size and budget that have a very significant impact on our daily lives," she added. In Bizkaia, she also confirmed that "we are focused on promoting line 4" of the Bilbao metro, as well as continuing ongoing works such as those for suburban line 5.
Regarding the operation of the new Topo in Donostialdea, she recalled that it will be implemented in two phases: the first starting July 18th with the entry into service of the Altza-Galtzaraborda variant and the inauguration of the new Pasaia station, and the second in autumn, before Christmas, with the launch of the three new stations in the capital. All of this aims to "greatly improve frequencies and allow the use of this public transport without needing to constantly check the time".
On the subject of commuter rail services, whose management the Basque Government assumed on January 1, 2025, she stated that in a year and a half, "very significant steps" have been taken to improve the service, such as establishing commuter lines in the Llanada alavesa and the Karrantza-Aranguren rail shuttle. Furthermore, she expects that after the third-rail works in Gipuzkoa, which are "nearing completion", there will be an improvement "that citizens will notice and appreciate". In both this territory and Bizkaia, the Minister of Sustainable Mobility highlighted that improvements to tracks and stations are being made in agreement with the Ministry and Adif to enhance the service, which "entails inconveniences".
Finally, concerning the current heatwave in Euskadi, García Chueca confirmed that the high temperatures are affecting the cooling systems of rail and tram units, leading to the reduction of some services and the temporary suspension of others "to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers and those who work in our service".
