The educational community of Hernani, in collaboration with experts from the primary sector, culinary professionals, and legal advisors, has developed a detailed proposal for school canteens. This project has received the support of the six schools and all parent associations in Hernani, as well as all political parties in the Hernani City Council.
The core of the proposal is the creation of a public entity in the town to manage logistical and nutritional aspects. The goal is to ensure local, sustainable, and quality food, working with regional producers and, if necessary, resorting to other sources. For this, it would be essential for the Basque Government's competence over school canteens to be shared with the Hernani City Council.
Three main alternatives have been presented: the first, for each school to have its own kitchen; the second, a local kitchen that would prepare food for all schools in Hernani, cooling it and then reheating it in the schools themselves; and the third, transporting hot food, although this is the least appealing option.
“"If the administration is willing to provide a good service, it should also be willing to pay for that good service."
Representatives of the proposal have appeared before the Education Committee of the Basque Parliament, where they have presented their concerns and solutions. Recent announcements by the Basque Government, regarding the intention to install new kitchens in schools, seem to align with the Hernani project. However, PNV representatives have raised three main concerns: cohesion, economic efficiency, and legal responsibilities. Hernani's representatives have clarified that they do not want price increases to fall on families, and that the administration should be willing to pay for a quality service.
They have also indicated that they have been requesting a meeting with the Department of Education for almost a year but have not yet received a response. For this reason, they have turned to the Parliament, so that their proposal can be heard and to achieve direct communication with the Department of Education.
