Azkoitia's traditional Basque sports athlete, Julen Alberdi Txikia IV.a, has reaffirmed his dominance in the Euskal Duathlon by winning the championship for the second time. In the grand final held at the bullring in Tolosa, the athlete from Azkoitia surpassed his own record from last year, completing the course 38 seconds faster. Ibai Soroa secured the second position, and Xabier Zaldua came in third.
A total of eleven athletes participated this year, maintaining last year's format which combines wood-chopping and running disciplines. Competitors had to chop a 45-ounce log horizontally and another vertically, followed by a 500-meter run within the bullring itself. These exercises were repeated four times.
“"When I saw I was gaining distance on my rivals, with that joy, I moved forward quite easily amidst the suffering."
Alberdi delivered a remarkable performance and, in his own words, enjoyed the final. "When I saw I was gaining distance on my rivals, with that joy, I moved forward quite easily amidst the suffering," he stated. Thus, he has claimed the championship for the second consecutive year.
In the overall standings, following Alberdi, were Ibai Soroa (00:26:20) and Xabier Zaldua (00:27:08). The list of participants also included Aitzol Atutxa, Eneko Saralegi, Eloy Kortxero, Oier Mitxelena, Julen Kañamares, Oier Kañamares, Ioritz Gisasola, and Julen Larrea.
