Euskadi has assigned its first Internal Resident Doctor (MIR) for Family and Community Medicine, despite a significant shortage of professionals in this field, yet positions in Gipuzkoa remain vacant.

Euskadi has allocated its first MIR position for Family and Community Medicine, a specialty facing a considerable lack of professionals. This assignment will take place in the Barakaldo-Sestao health region, linked to the Bizkaia Family and Community Care Teaching Unit, with San Eloy Hospital serving as the reference center.
This marks the first of 115 available positions in this medical branch out of the 438 offered by Euskadi for the current academic year. These aspiring doctors are set to commence their specialized training in June.
Additionally, the first position for Emergency and Urgency Medicine has been awarded, a new specialty introduced this year with five available posts. The residency for this specialty will be conducted at Cruces Hospital in Bizkaia, lasting four years, with the initial two years common to the Family Medicine specialty.

The new Emergency and Urgency Medicine specialty will provide specific training for work that has been performed for years without proper recognition.

Despite the selection round on Wednesday, where 700 other individuals chose their training locations, these two specialties continue to have vacant positions in Gipuzkoa. This territory has 39 Family Medicine positions out of the 115 offered for specialist medical training.
The Immunology branch also debuted on Wednesday morning. The first medical professional to select this specialty across the entire National Health System has chosen to train at Donostia Hospital. The deadline for these assignments extends until May 27, by which time all 12,366 national MIR positions are expected to be filled.
