What began as a common discomfort ended in a high-precision operation at Mondragón Hospital. A patient had a swollen finger due to a ring that was too tight, impeding normal blood flow. Faced with the medical team's inability to remove the jewelry, the expertise of firefighters from the Zubillaga station was required to solve the problem, as shown in images released by Bomberos Euskadi.
Traditionally, emergency services use manual shears to cut gold or silver rings, malleable metals that yield to simple pressure. However, the problem arises with the rise of stainless steel or titanium costume jewelry. These materials are the «black beast» of healthcare personnel: they are so hard that hospital tools break or chip before they can cut through the jewelry.
The intervention of firefighters in these cases is not a technique of brute force, but of meticulous engineering and expertise. As seen in the intervention images, the maneuver consists of three critical moments: first, dermal protection, by inserting an ultra-thin metal sheet between the ring and the skin; second, abrasive cutting, using a high-speed mini-rotary tool with diamond or silicon carbide discs; and third, continuous cooling, applying a constant stream of cold physiological saline to dissipate the extreme heat generated by friction.
After several minutes of tension and surgical precision, the Zubillaga personnel managed to cut the piece, freeing the limb without causing additional injuries. This incident occurred on April 8, 2026.
To avoid ending up on a stretcher under a firefighter's radial tool, experts recommend acting quickly at the first signs of swelling. It is crucial not to force, as panic increases blood pressure and inflammation. The thread trick can be used by passing dental floss under the ring and wrapping the rest of the finger firmly to compress the tissue, then unwrapping from below so the thread pushes the ring off. Advanced lubrication with glass cleaner (like Cristasol) is an effective professional trick if soap doesn't work, due to its ability to reduce surface tension. Finally, cold and elevation: immerse the hand in ice water and keep it above heart level for 15 minutes before attempting any method. If the finger appears bluish or purplish, there is a loss of sensation, or the pain is sharp, medical services should be sought immediately, as every minute counts to prevent irreversible tissue damage.
