Following a sweltering Friday with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees in Gipuzkoa, Saturday offers a brief respite, particularly along the coast. However, oppressive heat is forecast to return on Sunday and is expected to persist for several days.
The Basque Meteorological Agency, Euskalmet, has announced the activation of three yellow alerts related to heat between Saturday and Monday. On Saturday, inland areas will see highs around 30-31 degrees, while coastal temperatures will not exceed 25.
On Sunday, the heat will become alarming, especially in the inland areas, starting around 13:00 and lasting until 20:00. Maximum temperatures could surpass 33 degrees inland, reaching 29 degrees near the coast. Southeast winds are expected to contribute to this temperature rise.
Monday will see a widespread heat surge, with strengthening southeasterly winds pushing thermometers even higher. Maximum temperatures are predicted to range between 33 and 35 degrees across the entire territory. Overnight temperatures may not drop below 20 degrees in some locations, bordering on a tropical night.
Consequently, Euskalmet anticipates activating two yellow alerts. The first is for persistent high temperatures throughout the day, from midnight Sunday to midnight Monday. The second is for extreme temperatures between 13:00 and 20:00, when thermometers could reach 32 degrees on the coast and 33 inland.
The pattern is expected to continue similarly on Tuesday, with a slight cooling possible on Wednesday due to a minor shift in wind direction.
