Euskadi has concluded Easter Week with a slightly lower traffic volume than initially forecast, recording 1,068,000 vehicle movements and, crucially, no fatalities on its roads.

The roads of Euskadi have closed the Easter Week holiday period with a traffic volume slightly below expectations. An average of 534,000 inbound and an equal number of outbound movements were registered, representing a decrease of nearly 0.2% compared to 2025 data. Rainfall, particularly on Wednesday, April 1, and Holy Thursday, April 2, key days for the outbound operation, influenced mobility, preventing movements from reaching initial forecasts.
Regarding cross-border traffic, the Biriatou pass saw a 6.4% increase compared to Easter Week 2025. This rise, which significantly exceeded initial predictions, is mainly attributed to the summer-like temperatures recorded between Saturday, April 4, and Easter Monday, April 6. Concerning access to the Basque capitals, traffic entering Bilbao decreased by 4%, while Donostia experienced a 2% increase. Vitoria-Gasteiz, meanwhile, maintained similar figures to the previous year.
In terms of accidents, during Easter Week 2026, between April 1 and 6, a total of 78 traffic accidents were recorded on Euskadi's roads. There were no fatalities, and 5 people sustained serious injuries. This represents a 29% decrease in accidents compared to 2025, when 110 accidents occurred.
The highest traffic flows were concentrated at usual points, though with lower densities than during last year's Easter Week. In Bizkaia, during the outbound operation, the longest queues towards Cantabria occurred on Saturday, April 4, between 11:45 AM and 1:30 PM, with tailbacks of up to 9 km. During the return operation, on Easter Monday, April 6, 2 km queues were registered on the A-8 near Muskiz, heading towards Donostia, due to two accidents.
In Gipuzkoa, the Easter Week outbound operation caused traffic incidents on the AP-8, heading towards Bayonne, near the Biriatou toll booth, on Holy Thursday, April 2, with queues reaching up to 6 km. A similar situation occurred the day before, Wednesday, April 1. Additionally, a tanker truck accident on the N-1, near Idiazabal, on Holy Thursday morning, caused tailbacks of up to 7 km. On Easter Monday, the A-15 in Elduain saw 7 km queues due to traffic intensity and bypasses for tunnel works.
In Araba, the outbound operation experienced queues of up to 3 km at the Armiñón junction (connecting the A-1 and AP-1 towards Burgos-Madrid) during the afternoon of Wednesday, April 1, and the morning of Holy Thursday, April 2. During the return operation, no queues were recorded at this point on Easter Monday, April 6, thanks to the signaling operation coordinated by the Security Department of the Basque Government-Eusko Jaurlaritza and the Provincial Council of Álava.
