The city of Eibar has been officially designated a Place of Democratic Memory, as it was the first to proclaim the Second Republic on April 14, 1931, as published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published this Monday the resolution declaring Eibar a Place of Democratic Memory. This designation highlights the historical significance of the city, which was the first municipality to proclaim the Second Spanish Republic on April 14, 1931.
This decision by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory acknowledges Eibar's "historic and democratic" symbolism, making it a "prominent reference" in Spain's collective memory, according to the BOE.
The official publication emphasizes that Eibar was one of the 11 cities "most punished" during the Civil War by the rebel army and its international supporters from Germany and Italy.
According to the BOE, the city meets the criteria for recognition as a Place of Democratic Memory, "having been the scene of both the active defense of republican legality and serious violations of international humanitarian law".
Following its publication today in the BOE, this declaration has been definitively registered in the Inventory of Places of Democratic Memory.
