Through this agreement, the Cidetec technology center in Donostia and the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council's Department of Sustainability have reaffirmed their commitment to consolidate the Naturklima laboratory. This facility specializes in characterizing materials derived from battery recycling. The initiative aims to position Gipuzkoa as a benchmark in energy transition and the circular economy, demonstrating its dedication to sustainability.
Under the agreement, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council will allocate 350,000 euros for the acquisition of new scientific equipment with “high added value.” This investment will be complemented by Cidetec's own investment in equipment, infrastructure, and qualified research personnel. The goal is to expand the capabilities of the laboratory, located in the Eskusaitzeta industrial park in Donostia, for the preparation, formulation, and characterization of materials from battery recycling.
Both entities have stated that the agreement strengthens a line of work initiated two years ago. This work aims to reinforce the value chain in the territory concerning the recycling, reuse, and second life of batteries, which are key elements in electric mobility. Proper treatment will contribute to fostering industrial decarbonization and support Gipuzkoa's process of acquiring autonomy, which is strategic “in a European context of increasing demand for energy storage technologies.”
