Amaia Barredo, the Basque Government's Counselor for Food, Rural Development, Agriculture, and Fisheries, highlighted the value of pastoralism as a promising future sector during the Artzain Eguna celebration in Ordizia.
During the Artzain Eguna event in Ordizia, Counselor Amaia Barredo stated that the celebration not only pays tribute to a profession but also to a way of life, knowledge passed down through generations, and work that is indispensable for the country.
“
"Being a shepherd is not a matter of the past, but also of the future, because pastoralism maintains economic activity, landscape, biodiversity, culture, community, and food sovereignty."
Barredo advocated for “the prestige and dignity of the primary sector,” stressing that “a society that does not value those who feed it is a society that weakens.” She also recalled that the Basque Government is working with a long-term vision to strengthen the sector, utilizing tools such as the new Basque Agricultural and Food Policy Law, which is in its final phase, the 2030 Rural Development Strategy, and the recent establishment of the Basque Rural Development Network.
“
"Defending the primary sector is also defending our towns, our territory, and the conditions for there to be generational replacement, activity, and a future."
