As every year, the Zarautz promenade will become a festival hub for basketball this weekend. The 3x3 tournament, organized by the ZAST Zarautz basketball club and held annually since 1998, is part of the Gipuzkoa regional circuit and is a significant fixture on the municipality's and region's sports calendar.
Organizers have announced that 133 teams have already registered for the tournament, expressing their satisfaction with the response. Those interested still have the opportunity to sign up until tomorrow midday, 12:00 PM. Registration can be completed via a dedicated digital form for the tournament, accessible through a link on the basketball club's Instagram account.
Participation fees for the tournament vary by category. For the mini, infantil, cadete, and junior categories, each team will pay 15 euros as a base fee, plus an additional 5 euros per extra player. For the cuadrillas (groups of friends) tournament, the registration fee is 25 euros per team and 5 euros per player. Finally, for the Gisaski tournament, in the senior category of the Gipuzkoa circuit, the registration fee will be 50 euros per team.
The event will kick off on Friday afternoon, around 3:30 PM, with matches in the junior and cadete categories. On Saturday, starting at 10:00 AM, it will be the turn of the infantil category, followed by the cuadrillas competitions in the afternoon. Sunday will feature games throughout the day: the mini category will compete in the morning, and in the afternoon, the senior Gisaski tournament, for both men and women, will conclude this year's edition.
Xabier Vazquez, a member of the organizing committee, explained that the tournament had to be postponed to August this year, although it was originally planned for July. "The downside of August is that many senior teams are already in their preseason," he stated, noting that some players are not encouraged to participate.
Although in the past the federated and popular tournaments were organized separately on different dates, they have been combined for years. Vazquez highlighted that the Gisaski is the more serious tournament, but also pointed out that the cuadrillas matches are fun and serve to encourage participation. He emphasized that it offers an excellent opportunity for players in the lower categories to practice basketball in a friendly atmosphere, attracting many local and external participants during the holiday season.
