The project to cover Berriz velodrome advances with a new proposal: the Mancomunidad of Durangaldea has asked the Bizkaia Provincial Council to assume "institutional leadership" of the infrastructure, covering both investment and future management.

Following the request made last week by several Bizkaian cyclists for the infrastructure to be covered "as soon as possible", the Mancomunidad of Durangaldea has announced that it will present a proposal to the Bizkaia Provincial Council today for it to assume the velodrome's "institutional leadership".
According to the Mancomunidad, the velodrome can become a "reference infrastructure for all of Bizkaia" due to its characteristics and potential use. Therefore, it believes that "its future cannot be analyzed solely from the perspective of Durangaldea's economic capacity", and requests the Provincial Council, if it considers the project "strategic", to assume greater institutional leadership, both in investment and in the future management model.
Covering the infrastructure would require an investment of 6.8 million euros, of which 3.5 million would be covered by the Durangaldea institution itself. However, the Mancomunidad has indicated that this financial commitment would "significantly condition" its financial capacity and its ability to respond to public services. For this reason, they will propose that the Provincial Council assume its "leadership".
The Mancomunidad has explained that it has met with the region's mayors to conduct a "shared reflection on future opportunities and challenges". The entity has shown itself "willing to collaborate within its means" and to participate in the project's development, provided it is within a framework "compatible with the institution's economic capacity and the guarantee of public services". They have also acknowledged the work carried out over the years by cycling clubs, sports associations, and users in Durangaldea, and the value the velodrome has held for the region's sports and youth development.
