Mañaria hosted the IX National Meeting of Earth Sciences Entities this past weekend, on May 30th and 31st. The event was organized by the Hontza Museoa Foundation and the Aranzadi Science Society, with the support of the Mañaria City Council and the Provincial Department of Culture. Representatives from associations interested in Earth Sciences from various regions of Spain, including Catalonia, Alicante, Aragon, Madrid, and Murcia, gathered for the meeting, totaling around 60 participants. From the Basque Autonomous Community, the associations MUFOMI, Luberri, and Harridunak participated.
The Aranzadi Science Society has given a positive assessment of the meeting, emphasizing that it served to "strengthen relationships." According to their statement, the event began early Saturday morning with the distribution of accreditations and welcoming remarks from Aitziber Areitio, the mayor of Mañaria, Leire Huerta, director of the Hontza Museoa Foundation, and Joxeba Larrañaga from the Aranzadi Science Society. Following this, Enrike Huerta, president of the Hontza Museoa Foundation, delivered a lecture on the origins and evolution of the museum. Subsequently, doctors Asier Gomez and Monika Villalba presented talks on "Neanderthals in the Basque Country" and "The land encompassing Durangaldea," referencing the numerous remains of Ursus spelaeus (cave bear) found in the area.
After lunch, the program continued with a guided tour of the Hontza Museoa and another to the Angurreta quarry. Participating in these visits were Dr. Victor Arrizabalaga, head of the quarry, and geological doctors Arantza Aranburu and Laura Damas from the Aranzadi Science Society. Despite these activities taking up a significant part of the afternoon, attendees still had the energy for a meeting to discuss the plans for next year's gathering and other concerns of the associations involved in Earth Sciences.
On Sunday, to conclude the event, a guided walk through the Urkiola Natural Park was organized with Dr. Arantxa Bodego from the geology department of the Aranzadi Science Society, to explore the geological peculiarities of the area. The proceedings were rounded off with a snack in Urkiola.
