The municipality of Garai has taken initial steps to form an energy community, aiming to boost renewable energy use and consumption savings in the Durangaldea region.

The municipality of Garai has taken its first step towards establishing an energy community, securing a 15,125 euro grant from the Provincial Council. This funding will enable the council to organize various activities to promote the community, including a public presentation of the project, training sessions, a feasibility study, and member recruitment.
According to the council, the project aims to reduce energy consumption, promote the use of renewable energy sources, strengthen cooperation between the municipality and its residents, and protect the environment. It also recalls the installation of solar panels at the Garai fronton in 2021 and announces that sports facilities will be equipped with aerothermal systems.
The governing team of Garai (EAJ) had committed to forming an energy community during the current legislative term and allocated funds for this project in the 2026 municipal budget. Municipal sources state that the opposition (Herriko Taldea) made no contribution and abstained from the vote.
