The lack of safe pedestrian access in the Iguria neighborhood of Elorrio has created years of uncertainty and risk, significantly impacting the daily lives of its residents who struggle to cross the N-636 or travel to the town center on foot or by bicycle.
According to residents, the absence of a proper route forces pedestrians and cyclists to navigate heavy traffic on a stretch of road with "visibility difficulties" and where vehicle speed poses an "added danger." This situation has been exacerbated in recent years by the impact of the High-Speed Train (TAV) construction works.
The City Council acknowledges the problem, stating it is a "long-standing demand." Municipal sources indicate they have repeatedly informed the Provincial Council of Bizkaia about the need for improvements on the N-636.
Among the local government's proposals is the installation of a footbridge for safe road crossing. However, they report that the Provincial Council has so far "declined to undertake this action," citing future works planned for the continuation of the Durango-Beasain highway. Consequently, the Council has urged the Department of Infrastructure and Territorial Development to ensure the project includes "a specific solution" for safe mobility, aiming to "address a daily urgency" for residents and "improve the connection" of the enclave with the rest of the town.
