EH Bildu spokesperson Maite Usabiaga emphasized that the motion aimed to recall the political and institutional significance of those "two historical moments". "The abolition of the fueros represented a great loss for the people, in terms of self-government and historical rights. It was a measure imposed from outside," she stated. She highlighted the need for "adequate political-institutional tools" to face complex future challenges, underscoring the important role of municipalities in this regard, as expressed in the "Movement of Mayors".
PNV spokesperson Kepa Sebele also deemed the anniversary important and indicated that the PNV's intention is to encourage all municipalities in Euskal Herria to take another step. However, the socialist representative Alberto Alonso voted against, arguing that "we have always wanted to address a population that legitimizes itself looking towards the future, not the past".
Furthermore, a motion presented by the PNV and unanimously approved guarantees the right to take the Baxoa exam in Basque. Sebele described the request as "common sense", stating that "each person should have the option to take it in their mother tongue or in the official language they prefer".
Usabiaga, while supporting the motion, added that the situation arises because three administrations influence Euskal Herria and the language laws differ, resulting in varying language rights depending on the location within Euskal Herria. "We wanted to assert that all Basque speakers should have the same language rights".
Alberto Alonso, for his part, indicated that the motion advocates for the defense of language rights and that they agree that Basque is "established on both sides of the Bidasoa River".
