The garden, located next to Eusebio Gurrutxaga square, was officially opened yesterday, even though residents had been using it for some time. At the event, Mayor Iñaki Ostolaza explained that the goal was to make the space "available to the citizens." The works, with a budget of 328,930 euros, have been largely financed by the European Union's Next Generation funds.
Ostolaza emphasized that this garden is not just a tourism-related project, but rather "a new space for the people of Zumaia to enjoy, gather, and experience the town in a different way."
Urban Planning Councilor Argi Yeregi placed the project within a "strategy to reclaim public spaces in the town," also mentioning the opening of the Convent garden and upcoming works at Maritontxo. The Erkibe garden's main objectives are to integrate the previously closed Erkibe area, create a new green meeting point, and consider sustainability and climate.
Although the garden is now open, the future of the Erkibe house is still being decided through a public process. Following initial meetings with residents and merchants, a session with producers is scheduled for today. The council encourages citizens to fill out a questionnaire and submit ideas. The first conclusions from this listening phase are expected before summer.
