Year after year, one event has remained a constant in the Sanjuandegi festival program: the bull spectacle. This year, residents will once again have the opportunity to enjoy the bulls, but with a couple of novelties. Firstly, unlike in recent years, large bulls will be the protagonists. Secondly, the event will be held on Sunday afternoon, from 16:00 to 17:30, and will be protected by fencing in the Jose Antonio Agirre square. The bulls from the Biri ranch will once again feature in Sanjuandegi this year.
Xabi Iturralde, a member of the organizing committee XJ Auzolanean responsible for the Sanjuandegi bull event, explained the reasons for the changes. "Initially, as every year, we intended to hold a spectacle of small bulls on Sunday morning, but due to the slow regularization process for events involving small bulls, it became impossible for us to organize it." Faced with this situation, the committee embraced the idea of bringing large bulls to the neighborhood.
Traditionally, the bull event in Sanjuandegi took place early on Sunday morning, the last day of the festival, aiming to "enliven and entertain" those who stayed up all night. In recent years, smaller bulls were used because they "encourage people to participate" and help maintain the festive atmosphere, as explained by Denis Aizpuru, a member of the XJ Auzolanean festival committee. However, last year, the committee prepared a heifer show, and observing that participation was "quite scarce," they decided to forgo organizing the large bull spectacle in the morning. "We believe that by moving the bull event to the afternoon, more people will attend."
The old customs are returning to Sanjuandegi, therefore, although the time and location of the event will be different. It will be an appointment that will maintain the identity of the neighborhood's festivals and provide them with a perfect conclusion, adding a new chapter to the bull tradition. In fact, throughout the long history of the Sanjuandegi festivals, a variety of bull spectacles have been organized; in the early years, for instance, the 'sokamuturra' (tethered bull) was the star event of the neighborhood. Examining the programs over the years reveals that bull-related events have never been absent; whether on Saturday or Sunday, at one time or another, in one place or another, a bull spectacle has always been held: events with small bulls and calves for children, the fire bull, or the ring championship for bull-riders are examples of this.
This year's event will continue the tradition: for the first time, the spectacle of large bulls will take place on Sunday afternoon in Jose Antonio Agirre square.
