The Durango City Council will undertake restoration and conservation work this month on two heritage elements located in Pinondo Park: the Pinondo Cross and the sculpture dedicated to Pablo Pedro Astarloa. This initiative is part of the municipal commitment to protecting cultural heritage, a priority due to both its historical value and legal status.
Both pieces are listed in the Municipal Subsidiary Regulations as elements to be preserved, reinforcing the need for intervention to ensure their proper maintenance. Currently, they show signs of dirt and deterioration that necessitate specialized action. In the case of the cross, a stone structure from the 16th century, various pathologies have been detected due to the passage of time and exposure to environmental agents, such as biological colonization, pollution accumulation, black crusts, rust residues, and sand erosion processes, in addition to minor structural damage.
The intervention will be carried out following specialized technical criteria and current regulations, with the primary objective of ensuring a respectful approach adapted to the needs of each element. The works have been awarded for an amount of 8,457 euros, including VAT.
To ensure safety during the execution of the work, the area will be temporarily cordoned off, limiting access to the vicinity of the sculptures. With this action, the Durango City Council fulfills its commitment to the conservation of cultural heritage, aiming to preserve and enhance it for the enjoyment of all citizens.
