The municipal plenary session today approved a motion with votes in favor from PNV, PSE-EE, and Elkarrekin Podemos, and the abstention of EH Bildu. The motion condemns the fires of vehicles and containers, the damage caused to urban furniture and commercial establishments, and the attacks against agents of the Ertzaintza and the Bilbao Municipal Police. It also calls for those responsible for the events to answer before justice.
The approved text reiterates that violence, threats, coercion, and damage to public and private property are incompatible with the legitimate exercise of the rights to assembly, demonstration, and freedom of expression. In this regard, the City Council calls on all political and social actors, as well as all citizens, to reject violence as a tool for political confrontation and to defend democratic coexistence through peaceful means and respect for the rights of all people.
Furthermore, the City Council expresses its solidarity with all persons affected by the disturbances, especially residents, merchants, workers, and owners of damaged vehicles and establishments. It also recognizes and thanks the work carried out by the emergency services, the Ertzaintza, and the Bilbao Municipal Police to guarantee public safety and restore normality.
The motion also addresses the City Council's concern regarding the communication practices of far-right agitators, which contribute to increasing social polarization and weakening democratic coexistence. Specifically, it condemns the spread of fake news, hate speech, and messages that stigmatize certain groups or promote social and political confrontation. The City Council emphasizes that condemning acts of violence is fully compatible with rejecting such practices and reaffirms its commitment to truthfulness, pluralism, and respect.
