This comprehensive initiative will cover approximately 430 hectares, particularly within the Special Conservation Area (SAC) of the Urdaibai Coast and Marshes. According to current mapping, invasive exotic species already spread across 130 hectares. The most problematic are Baccharis halimifolia (93 hectares) and the Pampas grass or Cortaderia selloana (19 hectares).
The Provincial Council, through the association Basalan, has launched the work plan, with initial interventions taking place in the San Kristobal sector in Busturia and Forua. The goal is not only to remove invasive plants but also to restore the area and conduct thorough monitoring to prevent their reappearance.
The work will be tailored to the status of each species, using manual or mechanical methods to minimize impact on the native ecosystem. Additionally, drones and advanced technology will be employed to analyze and control vegetation development from the air.
The initial work team consists of four people, but during peak periods, it is expected to grow to 20-25 workers, primarily between May and September.
These invasive species can displace native flora and completely alter the natural habitat. Therefore, after removal efforts, native plants will be replanted to restore the environment. Concurrently, the Bizkaia Provincial Council will launch a awareness campaign with local municipalities and citizens to help identify these species and prevent their spread.
