At an event held in Lezo, students had the opportunity to share the activities they developed throughout the academic year, the good practices they implemented, and their learnings about sustainability. The importance of small daily actions, such as turning off lights when not needed or avoiding water wastage, was highlighted for fostering environmental awareness and responsible habits.
Students have actively participated in the project, working in energy teams established at each school. Within these teams, in collaboration with teachers, janitors, and other members of the educational community, they have analyzed the energy and water consumption of the schools and developed proposals for the responsible use of resources, implementing sustainable practices.
Utilizing natural sunlight whenever possible, ventilating classrooms appropriately and at suitable times to avoid unnecessary heating, limiting ventilation to a maximum of 5 minutes, designating a person or team responsible for turning off lights and electrical devices before leaving, using only necessary radiators in classrooms, adjusting shower water temperature and duration appropriately, and keeping taps open only for the required time are some of the good practices proposed by the students. Additionally, they have conducted communication campaigns and developed strategies to achieve savings or address problems and malfunctions.
The event was attended by Teo Alberro, Mayor of Pasaia; Iraitz Pazos, Councilor for Environment; Naroa Zabala and Yolanda Martin (from the Errenteria City Council); Ainara Lasarte (Director of the Urban Regeneration, Mobility, and Energy Department of the Oarsoaldea Development Agency); Gloria Vázquez (Director of Environmental Administration of the Sustainability Department of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa); Xabier Sesma (Oarsoaldea sustainability technician and project facilitator); and Nerea Ibáñez (representative of the environmental consultancy Arazi). Representatives and technicians from the city councils of Errenteria, Lezo, Oiartzun, and Pasaia, as well as students and members of the educational community from the participating schools, were also present.
The 50/50 project is an initiative to promote responsible energy and water use within the educational community, combining environmental education, student participation, and reflection on daily habits. The aim is for students to gain close insight into resource usage in schools, reflect on their consumption patterns, and learn to make decisions related to environmental care, transferring acquired knowledge to their daily lives.
