Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) has announced that the new bridge at the Usurbil train station will open to the public on April 29, in the early morning. This includes the elevators and stairs providing access to the lower part of the area. However, the new station will not yet be operational, so access to the platforms will continue to be via the current entrance, next to the old station.
The opening of the bridge will restore definitive pedestrian connection between both sides of the track after nearly two years of construction and provisional solutions. On the night of April 29 to 30, the provisional bridge installed during the works will also be dismantled.
The construction of the new railway access has taken longer than initially anticipated. The old bridge was closed in May 2024 with an expected impact of ten months, but the deadlines have ultimately been extended. The new elevated walkway was installed last year but could not be put into operation until the required accessibility conditions were met.
The infrastructure will connect the upper and lower parts of the area via stairs and elevators. In total, it will feature four elevators: two located inside the future station for platform access, and two external ones, designed to connect with Zumartegi industrialdea, Santuenea, and Atallu. The commissioning of these external elevators was the final requirement to allow the bridge's opening.
Once the provisional bridge is removed, ETS will continue with the urbanization of the immediate surroundings. This action will complete the comprehensive reorganization of the space between the station and Atxega palace, where only this last section remained pending. Concurrently, the lighting along the entire promenade has already been renewed.
Separately, the City Council has declared the urbanization works on San Esteban street finished, a project closely linked from its inception to the construction of the new station. In fact, the Consistory executed the work in two phases, first the upper part and then the lower, to coordinate it with the railway project, as the new walkway has been built at a greater height than the previous one, directly influencing the design of the lower section of the street.
