The deadline to submit objections against the macro-wind farm project planned in the mountains between Hernani and Arano is open until May 4th, amidst claims of significant environmental impact.

The Urumea Bizirik association and the ecological movement have denounced that the project called "Ikatz Gane", promoted by the companies Enigma and Arena Green Power, with executives from the multinational Endesa behind them, would have a "very detrimental" impact on the vegetation and fauna of the surrounding mountains, and would lead to the "impoverishment of the rural area".
The project foresees five giant 33 MW wind turbines in the areas of Pagalegi and Etxolaberri, above Ereñotzu, on the borders between the municipalities of Hernani and Arano. The deadline for submitting objections ends on May 4th, and the Urumea Bizirik association has prepared a document for "popular objections" for citizens to sign and submit to the Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government.

"Such large-scale projects are not compatible with local community energy management, as they only generate speculation."

According to the denunciations, the project would imply the "industrialization" of the Urumea mountains and the "impoverishment of the rural area". Furthermore, it would put "at risk" the ecological corridor located between the Aiako Harria Natural Park and the Leitzaran Biotope, directly affecting the vegetation, endemic species, fauna, and aquifers of the area.
Urumea Bizirik has questioned the project's submission procedure itself, alleging a great "lack of information" and "transparency", which has left citizens "defenseless". The lack of consultation with the affected municipalities until the last moment has also been a major obstacle to submitting objections, due to the "short" deadlines.
In another objection submitted by a member of the ecological movement, it has been denounced that the project is incompatible with the values that Hernani's urban planning recognizes for that affected area, and that it would be mandatory to carry out a special plan, for which municipal authorization would be needed.
