The Escalerillas houses in Pasaia will be evicted today, as announced by residents and the Housing Union.

The houses popularly known as the Escalerillas houses in Pasaia will be evicted today. Residents and members of the Socialist Housing Union held a press conference yesterday afternoon in the square of the lonja in San Pedro to announce the eviction. According to their statements, within 24 hours they will 'empty Escalerillas', adding that 'the struggle of these residents does not end with the demolition of a block'.
They emphasized that the tenants of the two buildings have shown 'enormous dignity, organizational capacity, and a firm decision to defend the right to housing for the working class'. They also wanted to make it clear that 'if we have left the homes, it has not been by our own will; we have left them due to the threats and pressures exerted by the Port of Pasaia'.
'What has happened in Escalerillas is a clear example of a logic: the private profits of capitalist logic that places itself above social needs and the role that public institutions play in its service,' they denounced.
They also stated that 'the Port Authority of Pasaia is the one driving the evictions and the demolition of the block'. The Red Ferroviaria will once again be responsible for the construction of this infrastructure, and the company Algeposa will be 'the main beneficiary of this work'.
Dozens of people joined the call made through social media, wearing blue t-shirts with the slogan 'Escalerillas defendatu!'.
