“"Currently, our farmhouses and baserritarras are not experiencing the best situation. The decline that has been occurring for years has been compounded by international decisions from giants like Mercosur, which are leaving the primary sector of Euskal Herria in a tense wake. Imports, in addition to saturating our markets, are of lower quality than our products. This also creates a risk for our food health."

Vibrant street scene of a festival in a Basque town, with blurred figures and traditional architecture.
Astigarraga reaffirms its commitment to promoting the work of baserritarras by hosting the fifth Lurraldia events next week, which will include San Isidro Day and activities centered on peas.
The Astigarraga City Council, in collaboration with the Goldea and Baratze associations, has unveiled the program for the Lurraldia events scheduled for next week. These activities aim to highlight the value of baserritarras' work and promote local farm products, emphasizing the challenging situation currently faced by the primary sector.
From May 13 to 17, the Goldea and Baratze associations, in cooperation with the City Council, have prepared a comprehensive and engaging program. The events seek to appreciate the labor of baserritarras and encourage active citizen participation. The first activity, on Wednesday, will be a meeting to discuss the future operation of Umako, a facility the Council is preparing to host sales stalls for farm products after the summer.
The second event on the program will be a pintxo-pote on Thursday, where ten local bars will offer pintxos made with peas. An awards ceremony will conclude the day. On Friday, May 15, a guided visit to the orchards of Astigarraga will be organized for children from Herri Eskola.
However, the main highlight of that day will be the celebration of the traditional San Isidro Day, which is deeply rooted in Astigarraga and is undoubtedly the most prominent event in the region. Throughout the morning, as usual, there will be various activities: trikitilaris, a procession, a stone-dragging challenge with horses, bertsolaris, and a tribute to the Taula farmhouse, including a popular meal.
The events will not end there, as on Saturday, May 16, guided visits to the Lizardi farmhouse will take place, and on Sunday, Illarraren Eguna will be enjoyed throughout the morning. This final day will feature a market, livestock exhibition, pintxo distribution, and rural sports, in what has been a challenging year for peas.
