The meteorological agency Euskalmet has warned that, facing a severe heat event affecting all of Euskadi, a red alert will be issued on Monday, June 22nd, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Temperatures could reach around 40 degrees Celsius.
This red alert entails the activation of LABI's Situation 0, the Emergency Phase, with the Department of Security overseeing monitoring, evaluation, and forecasting through a technical committee at the SOS DEIAK Emergency Coordination Center.
Furthermore, we will be under orange alert throughout the day due to persistent high temperatures, with minimums of 20-21 degrees Celsius and maximums around 40. A yellow warning will also be in effect for forest fire risk, driven by high temperatures and the intensity of the southerly wind.
On Tuesday, June 23rd, we will remain in orange alert for high temperatures and yellow warning for fire risk. Sunny weather and southerly winds will prevail in the coming days, with a significant rise in maximum temperatures.
The Department of Health of the Basque Government has urged adherence to the recommendations of the recently approved 2026 Heat Plan to protect against the extreme and persistent high temperatures. These recommendations include avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours, wearing light clothing, refraining from strenuous physical activity, keeping homes cool, and drinking plenty of water and fluids.
Emphasis has been placed on caring for particularly vulnerable individuals – infants, the elderly, those with illnesses – as well as on occupational risk prevention, by avoiding work during peak heat hours and staying hydrated.
