The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and Treasury have announced that, due to the strong performance of the regional economy, 2026 projections are expected to be surpassed, which will increase the funds allocated to municipal financing. According to the provisional settlement, the Oñati City Council would receive 139,688 euros more than anticipated, an additional 3% over the committed amount.
Tax collection in Gipuzkoa has increased by 156% since 2000, with only two brief interruptions: during the 2008-2009 recession and in 2020 due to the pandemic. In the 2020 Foral Funds settlement, Oñati received 834,509 euros less than projected. While the final figures will be known in February, it is expected that municipalities will receive more funds.
The Diputación will allocate the first payment of the 2027 Foral Funds in February, and the municipalities of Gipuzkoa already know that 771,438,914 euros will be distributed, the highest amount to date. This distribution is based on population and other variables. The Oñati City Council will receive 11,717,788 euros, 687 thousand euros more than committed this year. Foral funds are crucial as they cover a significant portion of the municipal budget.
General Deputy Eider Mendoza highlighted the strength and positive dynamism of Gipuzkoa's economy. A 5.3% increase in collection is projected for 2026 compared to 2025, amounting to 355 million more. These positive figures are also reflected in municipal financing, considering the Basque institutional system is based on risk sharing.
