At the request of the Arrasate City Council and members of the San Andrés festival committee, local graffiti artist Mutiko Kristal is painting a vertical mural on a building on Doctor Bañez street, with the approval of the residents. "The neighbors have been very pleased with the proposal from the Festival Committee and the Council", stated Maider Morras, the Mayor of Arrasate. The work began on May 18th and is expected to be completed by mid-June.
The mural aims to reference the neighborhood's origins, specifically honoring the migrant women who arrived in San Andrés in the 1960s and the coexistence with them. "It is a tribute to the migrant women who came seeking work and better living conditions. They left their homelands behind and started a new life in Arrasate, alongside the industrial boom of the time", explained the mayor.
Morras added, "Those who arrived in the 1960s became rooted here, had children, and we have reached the present day through coexistence. Today, few question the significant value of this diversity. We have all built today's Arrasate together. We want to center the coexistence that migration brings". Through the mural, the aim is to highlight past migration experiences and their impact on the construction of contemporary society.
