Iñigo Ruiz Barron, a 42-year-old architect from Oñati, will be EH Bildu's candidate for mayor in Oñati. The party announced the decision on Saturday. Ruiz has been a member of the municipal government board during this legislative term and also heads committees such as Urbanism, Personnel, Services, Rural Development, and Socioeconomics. Additionally, he represents the Oñati City Council in several groups of the Debagoiena Mancomunidad.
According to the political board of EH Bildu, Ruiz possesses the training, experience, and knowledge of municipal management necessary to face the challenges of the coming years. The candidate himself has expressed his enthusiasm through a message shared on social media.
As head of the Urbanism department, Ruiz works to incorporate a community-oriented vision, equality, and inclusivity in public spaces, promoting the involvement and collaboration of other municipal departments and fostering a comprehensive approach. During this term, he has been managing significant projects such as the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) and the specific action plan to initiate proceedings to declare Oñati a tense housing area.
The announcement of the new candidate comes in the context of the Popular Assembly held by EH Bildu on Saturday, where dozens of people gathered to review the past term and begin defining the roadmap for the coming years.
