The Aloña Mendiko club in Oñati has been honored with four awards at the end-of-season handball gala, while Iñaki Cantero received the silver insignia for his career.

The end-of-season gala for Gipuzkoa handball has brought significant recognition to the Aloña Mendiko club in Oñati. The organization, celebrating its 50 years of history, development, and community roots, was not only honored for its anniversary but also received three additional awards. Notably, Iñaki Cantero was presented with the federation's silver insignia for his career. Due to health reasons, Cantero could not attend, and the award was accepted by directors José Miguel Gartzia 'Tuki' and Iñaki Mendarozketa. Furthermore, the second men's senior team was recognized for sportsmanship, and first-team player Unax Aranburu received the award for top scorer in the first territorial league.
Cantero, a prominent figure in local handball, expressed his gratitude for the tribute despite his absence. "I have a pang of regret for not being able to attend, I was looking forward to it, but when you can't, you can't," he explained, as 'Tuki' presented him with the insignia near the Aloña club offices. His recognition highlights his decades-long dedication to the club.
Cantero's career began in school sports in 1978, later joining the Aloña handball school, where he dedicated himself to the club and youth development. After a period with Bergara (1987-1995), he returned to Aloña, working tirelessly with the youth teams until late February. "My health problems don't allow me to be at one hundred percent, so after 47 years, it's time to 'retire'. I'll always be here to help, but I'm no longer able to coach a team," he stated. Cantero also served as a federation technician for over a decade, coaching the Gipuzkoa girls' U15 team and participating in training programs.
His record with Aloña includes numerous Gipuzkoa and Basque Country championships, as well as qualifications for the Spanish Championship in 1985, 2000, and 2002. His U16 girls' team secured a bronze medal in Mallorca in 1998. In addition to his coaching roles, Cantero was also a player, debuting as a junior for Aloña in 1978 and playing for the Academia Lábor team during his military service in Granada, where he was the runner-up in the Andalusian Championship.
