The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council will allocate approximately 12.5 million euros to the adaptation of the Greenway between Eskoriatza and Landa (Araba). This 18.6-kilometer route will be built on the old railway platform known as El Trenico, with works scheduled to begin in early 2027, divided into six phases.
The tender documents for the drafting of the project for the first two phases (7.5 kilometers between Eskoriatza and Zarimutz) have been published. The Council expects them to be drafted by the end of the year to allow for the commencement of works in 2027. The Ferrocarril Vasco-Navarro was one of the most ambitious railway engineering projects of the 19th century, aiming to connect Navarre, Araba, and Gipuzkoa.
The 18.6-kilometer route of the old railway has been divided into six lots, considering its length and condition. Five of the tunnels are not in suitable condition and will require study for their renovation, respecting the historical infrastructure. The initial budget was around six million euros, but after the study, it has increased to 12.5 million euros, a figure that is not definitive.
The first phase covers 4.4 kilometers from the Kuatruena neighborhood of Eskoriatza to Mazmela, and the second, 3.1 kilometers, reaches Zarimutz. The objective is for both projects to be completed by the end of the year for tendering and to start works in early 2027.
Felix Urkola, deputy for Road Infrastructure, explains that although a project existed in 2007, it was not undertaken. The mayor of Eskoriatza, José Ramón Zubizarreta, emphasized the need to address this project, and it is now estimated that the works will last two to three years, with completion expected by 2030.
