The Arrasate City Council will implement a new license plate reader system in the Old Town, replacing the current physical bollards that have caused numerous issues, with installations scheduled for May.

The main objective of this new system is to remove the physical bollards currently located in areas such as Maalako errabala, Gazteluondo kalea, San Frantzisko kalea, Erdiko kalea, Arrasate pasealekua, Mitarte kalea, Olarte kalea (Arbolapeta), and Zerkaosteta kalea, due to the frequent problems and malfunctions they have recently caused.

"These are not typical video surveillance cameras designed to record citizens; their sole function is to detect and read vehicle license plates, similar to readers already used in many car parks. This ensures privacy, as these devices are used exclusively for traffic control and permit verification."

City Council
The City Council emphasized that the devices to be installed are specific license plate readers, not conventional video surveillance cameras. Their sole function is to detect and read vehicle license plates, ensuring privacy by being used exclusively for traffic control and permit verification.
According to the City Council, the new system will bring several benefits. Firstly, it will improve safety and efficiency, as the reaction time for emergency services (ambulances, firefighters) will be reduced, eliminating the need to wait for bollards to lower. Secondly, malfunctions will be avoided, as the technical problems and repair inconveniences caused by physical bollards will disappear. Finally, the pedestrian zone will be strengthened, transforming the Old Town into a true pedestrian area by automatically controlling vehicle entry and duration of stay.
The works are expected to be carried out during May, and before implementation, collaboration with residents and distributors will take place to establish an adaptation period for the new system. The City Council added that this new system strictly complies with current data protection legislation, and all information will be stored encrypted.
